Welcome Back Families and Students!
2024-2025 School Year

It is truly an honor and a privilege for me to welcome you back for the 2024-2025 school year. The focus for this year is to continue to have our students working at high levels and to increase opportunities for students to participate in exciting and challenging lessons in their classrooms. We have opened our new STEM labs in our elementary schools, further refined our Career Connections classrooms in our middle schools, fully implemented our ninth and tenth grade programs in Advanced Manufacturing and Health Sciences, and continue to offer a wealth of opportunities across the curricula for students.

We are fortunate to have a staff of highly-trained professionals dedicated to doing what is best for children, and our outstanding test scores reflect their hard work. The pass rates on Standards of Learning tests for students continue to place Pittsylvania County Schools in the top twenty percent of school divisions (132) in the State. This speaks volumes about the work our teachers are doing and the support the students are receiving from home. By working together, parents and teachers provide the best opportunity for children to be successful. During the summer, we have continued to develop and enhance a variety of our District’s instructional programs and have several renovation projects taking place. The Division is increasing the number of middle school sports offered this year. Last year, middle school students could participate in boys’ basketball and girls’ volleyball. This year, golf, cross country, girls’ flag football and cheerleading will be offered.

A goal we continue to set every year is to ensure that every student attends school regularly. Chronic absenteeism negatively impacts student learning to such a degree that we recognize it as a top priority. Families play an important role in promoting student attendance, and parent involvement makes all the difference in ensuring regular student attendance. School and division staff members are working with community agencies, organizations, and our Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court to help promote regular school attendance. Working together, we can make a difference by helping students understand the importance of school attendance.

As we begin this new school year, please take advantage of the opportunities available during the first days of school to meet with your children’s teachers and speak with your principals. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school’s principal.

Sincerely,
Mark R. Jones
Division Superintendent
